Travel Insurance for Family Trips - FAQs

By
Here are some FAQs on the subject of travel insurance for family trips.
Is this cover still needed these days with the EHIC?
The EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) is very useful and it's free. It entitles you to free emergency health treatment in a member state to the same level as that which would be available to a local citizen. However, remember that its cover is not total. It won't cover certain forms of treatment categorised as 'non-emergency', or ancillary expenses such as air ambulance repatriation, or the costs of your relatives staying with you. Of course, the EHIC is not recognised outside of Europe.
Can I get cover for a period of time or just one-off holidays?
That depends upon your insurance provider, but travel insurance for family trips is typically available in either specified-duration (usually covering a break) or it might be possible to obtain annual cover if you and your family travel regularly. You may find that if you do travel several times a year, some form of annual cover might be most cost-effective.
Could some family members be excluded from cover?
Depending upon your provider, yes, that might be a possibility. Some policies might exclude people above a certain age or those suffering from serious pre-existing medical conditions.
What about certain destinations?
It might be the case that an individual policy provider decides the risks of visiting an individual country, or perhaps a region of a country, might be unacceptably high. If so, that will usually be clearly highlighted. Pay close attention if you are in some parts of the world and close to the border of a country that your policy does not cover. If you cross the border, accidentally or intentionally, you may risk invalidating your insurance protection.
Will a policy cover me for all risks?
That's perhaps unlikely. All policies carry terms, conditions and some exclusions. You should read these very carefully before deciding whether or not a policy's provisions are suitable for you.
If I claim, will I be investigated?
This is something of a misconception and something that sometimes causes concern to legitimate claimants. The fact is that, unfortunately, fraud is far from rare and companies are obliged to perform certain largely routine checks when a claim is lodged. This is partly to ensure the legitimacy of the claim and partly to ensure the circumstances are covered by the policy.
Contrary to some urban legend, reputable providers never approach a claim initially from the perspective of trying to find reasons to reject it. To the contrary, their sole objective is usually to try and resolve the claim to the policyholder's satisfaction as fast as possible.
How can I keep the cost of my cover down?
There are a number of options you might have including selecting a higher excess if your provider allows for such. Above all though, when looking for travel insurance for family trips, remember to shop around and compare quotations.
